What on Earth are SQL Server Hypothetical Indices, where do they come from, and how do you get rid of them?

OK, so I'm a little late to the party. I've been using it for a few days now, and I'm very pleased. Browsing is even faster, and there are new features like the Quick Find address bar that performs full-text searches on every page in your browsing history. Give it a try at www.opera.com/download.

Lately I've needed to compare the schemas of two or more databases and highlight the differences. Based on internet research, I settled on two contenders: AdeptSQL Diff and Red Gate SQL Compare. Both are reasonably fast. AdeptSQL's UI looks very 16-bit and has limited reporting options. Red Gate's UI is very attractive and offers more reporting options. However, Red Gate's product currently has a bug that considers quoted and unquoted trigger identifiers to be different, even if the identifier itself is the same. This resulted in a large number of false differences, forcing me to go with AdeptSQL for now. If Red Gate can fix this problem, I would be inclined to switch to their product in the future.

We enjoyed meeting the TechSmith team at TechED this year. We are big fans of Snagit and Camtesia Studio and all of us here at Falafel use their products for several years now.  SnagIt 9 was released this week at TechED with awesome new features.

Picture below is for Betsy Weber, Chief Evangelist of TechSmith, and Lino Tadros from Falafel Software at the show.  Stay tuned for great new announcements coming up from both companies partnering to bring the latest and greatest in technology to customers worldwide :)

I had the pleasure to be invited to participate on the "LINQ in the UI" panel at TechED 2008 this week with some of the brightest minds at Microsoft in regards to that topic.  I shared the stage with Amanda Silver, VB Program Manager, Erick Thompson, MS Program Manager and Charlie Calvert, C# community Program Manager.

LINQ_Panel_1

At Falafel, John Waters and Bary Nusz have been working very hard on releasing the new Telerik Trainer product for Telerik Corp. when they have used LINQ to XML and LINQ to Objects to simplify the UI code and make it readable and maintainable to build a XAML based WPF application.  The main point that we wanted to push on the panel is that LINQ is not just for queries and databases, but you can use it's power to build elegant User Interfaces as it is capable to work with any IEnumerable to accomplish the job.

Anybody familiar with WPF's storyboard knows that animating with the various UI elements is not a problem at all, but what happens when you want the storyboard to call some code behind? The most important thing to remember about the storyboard is that it can only affect dependency properties. So how do we use this to help us call some code behind?
