I can’t believe I am saying this, but it is true! My IPhone 3GS is OBSOLETE!

Couple of years ago when I moved from my beloved Verizon to AT&T in order to get my hands on the IPhone, I had to endure the torture, bad service and extreme ignorance of AT&T just for the pleasure of being able to use an extremely well designed IPhone.  I love the phone and HATE the service.  Visual Voice Mail, elegant UI, music, fast processors, hundred of thousands of app on the app store, etc… were strong enough for me to bite the bullet and go with AT&T.

Yesterday, I went back to Verizon and bought the new Motorola Droid after researching the phone for the last few weeks and I must say “WOW” I am very impressed!  It is amazing to say that I made 5 phone calls since I got it last night and was actually able to finish a conversation in all 5 phone calls :) that is something I missed in the last couple of years :)

Droid will cause some serious problems to the IPhone I believe as soon as they get their marketing strategy going and spend a lot more serious money to get the word out.

The Droid is a bit heavy (~6 Oz), but it did not bother me.  Having a 5 MP camera with FLASH that can be used as a Barcode Scanner (works very well) is awesome.  The processor on the Droid is way faster than the IPhone, hands down!

Having multiple apps running at the same time is great, being able to kill all running apps for memory and battery is cool, setting up my corporate Exchange email in 2 minutes and be able to FLAG an email which syncs with all my other computers is something IPhone still can not do which is important for someone that receives between 200 to 300 good emails per day.

Thousands of apps are already available on the Android marketplace, I don’t think I am missing anything I used to use on my IPhone, it is just plain Awesome!  Having a decent carrier is no joke, I am really excited to have the power of the IPhone and more with the power of a decent carrier.  I set up my Google Voice account with the new Droid and now I get a transcript of my voicemails immediately as well in an email.

Finally, as a geek, it was amazing to me to install Eclipse classic in 5 minutes on my machine, go to Google and install the Android framework (~30 MB) in few minutes, install it into Eclipse, create my first Android app, package it and install it on my device and voila, that is COOL! I don’t have to wait a month for the Gods to approve, install so many pieces of software, provisions, certificates, baloney with cheese, etc….

Anyway, I am a happy man! Get a Droid for Christmas! it is worth it, Awesome device!!!!

Lino,

Head over to the Motorola site, download and install MOTODEV Studio for Android 1.0.2 (http://community.developer.motorola.com/mtrl/board/message?board.id=Studio_Android&thread.id=339). They just updated it for Android 2.0. You'll get a lot more useful tools for building, debugging and publishing Android apps than with the standard Google Eclipse plugin.

Enjoy your new toy!

Hi Lino,

It is a very good article. My friend bought a Droid/TMobile at Costco. He did not go for Iphone. I am thinking of moving to smart-phone from aging Razr. So, I will take your comments into consideration.

By the way, your talk at BayNet Group meeting was great. Please do it more often.

Thanks,

Sunil
