Users in the Telerik Reporting Forums have been clamoring for a Stand-Alone Report Designer for a long time now. I’ve been working with Telerik Reporting for the past few years, which means I have spent my share of time researching issues in the forum. I have seen several posts by users asking for a Report Designer that doesn’t require Visual Studio. With the 2012 Q1 release of Telerik Reporting it is finally here.
The Telerik Report Designer allows a non-developer/report designer to have a separate tool to start working with the Telerik reports. This will free your developers up to work behind the scenes and allow designers and front end developers to work on the presentation of your data.
With the BETA release of the report designer you can define the layout of your report, including the detail section and groupings. You can add charts, sorting logic and create report parameters. You get the wizards (conditional formatting) and explorers. The Telerik Report Designer is also a multiple document interface allowing you to edit multiple reports at one time.
Let’s take a look at an example of defining a basic tabular report. When you start the Telerik Report Designer, you can open an existing report or create a new one.
When you choose “New report…”, the Report Wizard is opened. You can use the report wizard to create your report or cancel and create it manually. Continuing with the report wizard, you will need to provide a data source. I chose a SQL Data Source and entered a connection string and SQL statement for my table.
When you have completed the steps in the report wizard to configure a data source you are presented with this screen.
I choose the “Standard” report and clicked the “Next” button. The next step is the “Design Data Layout”. On this page you can define fields to show up in the report header, grouping fields and which fields you want to show in the detail section of your report. For this example, I chose to show all my fields in the detail section.
After clicking “Next”, you will see the “Choose Report Layout” step. For this one I accepted the defaults by clicking the “Next” button. Now you should be on the “Choose Report Style” step. In the “Style Sheets” section I chose “Aspect” and clicked “Next”.
The final step shows a summary of your choices, by clicking “Finish” the report designer will be opened with your new report.
Now you are able to choose the “Report Preview” tab at the top and click the “Preview” button in the upper left hand corner to see your report populated with the data.
From the report preview, you are able to export the new report to any of the 10 supported types. As you can see it is pretty simple to create a report with this tool and I would encourage you to try it out and explore the custom formatting options and different layouts that are available to you.
With the BETA version there are some features that are promised in the future release, some of these are user functions and user aggregates, subreports, external style sheets. These are detailed in the following Telerik blog:
